I'm a big fan of deserts … good thing I live in the American West. They are all different, they all have their moods. The Sonoran is spread across the southern half of Arizona and deep into the Mexican state of Sonora (from whence the name). The Saguaro is The icon, but it is hardly the only iconic feature found there. The plant assemblages, fauna, overall ecology, even the landscape, all say… Sonora …
A Tortolita Sunrise. This one was entirely about the light. The Catalina Mountains are behind me, delaying sunrise at my location by another half hour or so. The day has arrived on top of the Tortolita Mountains however, a thin bright line across the middle of the image. Then there is the interplay of first light with the clouds, and the range of blues across the sky. A lovely moment.
The Double Rainbow. Obviously this was about capturing the double rainbow during the short time it was there. The late afternoon thunderstorm had just passed; the low evening light, oblique on the mountain flank, was engaged in a dance with the shadows behind the ridges. Know what's cool? The double rainbow occurs when light entering a raindrop is reflected twice at the back of the raindrop. The secondary rainbow is always above the primary, and the prism color bands are reversed (take a close look).
