The land is open, surprisingly empty, the road lonely, a sense of timelessness pervasive. In this, the most populous state in the country, people are few and far between. Remote, majestic....silent.
This is Fox Point, 1400' above the Lucia Coast in the southern Big Sur country. At this elevation you cannot hear the sounds of the coast far below. The mourning doves are cooing softly as they tuck in for the night...soft music on the air...
Here it is. The Coast Highway. Highway 1. Mile after endless mile: it dips, it twists, it turns. The distance from Carmel-by-the-Sea to Cambria: 100 miles. The time to drive it: something out of The Twilight Zone...and entirely dependent on your expectations...
